Match Report:

The Uden team were beaten at the Quarter Final stage 1.5 to 3.5 by a seriously strong and experienced Malahide team in breezy and tough conditions.

In Sutton, Malahide sent two very strong pairings with each having a wily, experienced player, matched with a younger but very capable teammate.

First out for Sutton were Michael and Brian who were up against it from the start. After a slow start, they found their groove and had a couple of putts dropped at crucial moments they could have taken a home point. They battled hard to the end but just ran out of holes.

Interestingly, Michael’s opposite man also was second last Saturday at the Malahide Captain’s Day having won it the previous year.

Next out for Sutton were David and Niall who started with a birdie fest – 3 in the first 4 holes and never looked back from there despite some serious golf from the opposition. The Sutton pair played excellent 4 Ball match play, dovetailing brilliantly for the 17 holes played.

In a breezy and cold Malahide, Danny & Barry were pitted against a formidable father and son pairing whom Danny knew well from previous battles. The Malahide pairing started very quickly birding the 1 st and established an early lead. Despite the Sutton pair battling back from 3 down to 1 down at the turn, the Malahide pair holed a number of putts at crucial times to keep the Sutton pair at bay.

In a similar vain to the first match, Gareth and Marcus came up against a fast starting Malahide duo who birdied 2 of the first 4 holes to gain an early advantage. The Sutton pair fought back gallantly with some fine golf and the match was evenly balanced going into the back 9. The key difference again proved to be on the slick greens with the Malahide duo holing a number of long-range putts at pivotal points that killed any Sutton momentum.

In the final match, Kieran Cussen and John Houston came up against a seasoned and steady Malahide pairing. The Sutton duo took the match by the scruff of the neck early on and were quickly into a strong position that they maintained through the first 9 holes. The Malahide duo made some unbelievable up and downs in the early stages of the back 9 and the match continued to be finely balanced until they were called in early.

Unfortunately, we came up against a very strong Malahide team who putted brilliantly on the day on super slick greens in Malahide, which proved to be the deciding factor between the teams.
