Sutton Fortress holds strong!
Fresh from the men’s heroics at the weekend, SGC hosted Headfort GC in Round 3 of the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy. The Mary McKenna format gives the home team all five matches but Sutton were certainly not complacent especially as they were giving shots in four of the five pairings.
Although it was a bright, dry day, it was windy and cold (for the spectators anyway!) and the rough was still high from the Lady Captain’s Prize on Saturday. However, the tricky conditions did not deter our diamonds from producing sparkling golf.
The top pairing of Mary Lennon & Karen O’Kelly was fast out of the traps and played beautifully to claim victory on the 14th . This emphatic win set the stage for two more victories on the 14th green - from Joan Kelly & Jean Tierney and the final group of Catherine O Neill & Mary Cole. Tougher battles were happening on the other side of the road as Irene Morrow and Elisabeth Guinan went all the way to the 16th before claiming their victory. Noeleen Murphy and Marie Faller were extremely disappointed to be called in having fought back from 5 down to only 2 down with enough holes left to close out the match.
Headfort were magnanimous in defeat and wished Sutton continued success for the rest of the competition. It could be a few weeks before the next round opponents are lined up…..but we’ll be ready!
