Mary McKenna V Woodbrook (R2)

Sutton Diamonds still shining brightly!

May 31st May

Our Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy team recorded a historic victory in a bitterly cold Woodbrook yesterday. After the heroics of the sudden death win over Black Bush a few weeks ago in Round 1, it was hard to imagine another tight match going our way especially as all 5 pairings were away from home. The Mary McKenna is an unusual format with Home Advantage guaranteeing all 5 matches at the home venue. So the luck of the draw went to  Woodbrook who must have been feeling very confident after their convincing Round 1 win over Woodenbridge.

But the Ladies in Pink have hit some wonderful form over the last few weeks and they carried it to Woodbrook yesterday. Some marvellous golf was played tee to green (notably Mary Lennon and Catherine O Neill with their fairway woods) but it was on and around the greens that the match was won…Irene Morrow and Karen O’Kelly both red hot with the blade in hand.

At two matches all and the last pairing of Ita Slattery and Belinda Ennis all square after 16, the tension was palpable around the back of the Par 3 17th but these two warriors are clearly immune to pressure – Ita stitched a stunning 7 iron and Belinda knocked it in for birdie. They closed out the match on the 18th with Belinda sinking a lovely 4 footer for the “W”.

Woodbrook were magnanimous in defeat and heaped praise on the quality of golf on display. We now await the outcome of Elm Park v Headfort to see who will be visiting Sutton because this time around we have the Home Advantage!! Onwards and Upwards.
