Match Report – Jimmy Bruen Quarter Final v Howth

HOME

We had 3 home matches.

Match 1 saw David O’ Neill and Brian Fitzsimons up against a very strong Howth pairing, one of whom (Craig McMullen) was formerly a member in Sutton. The Howth pair led all the way through by as much as 3 up until Dave and Brian clawed the match back to all square on 18 to send the match down 19. Howth won the 19th with a very good par, Sutton missing a tricky 5-footer to half. An excellent match between 2 very strong pairings. (Sutton at one stage in the match went 9 pars on the trot and only won 1 hole in the 9).

Match 2 saw Niall McNamara and Sam Brennan take on another strong Howth pairing (with Eugene O’ Neill, formerly of this parish as one of the Howth pairing.). The match started with Howth going into an early lead and they were leading by as much as 3 up going into the back nine. Sutton again clawed the match back to 1 down after 14 but lost the 15 th and 16 th to lose the match. A good performance from the Sutton pair. In the end, Sutton were beaten by a more consistent Howth team.

Match 3 saw a fantastic performance from Stephen Moriarty and Simon Lewis. They led from the start and pulled away during their match winning 7 and 6 in the end. Great golf was played by the Sutton pair with the Howth pair not having their best day

AWAY

Match 4 saw the old warhorses Gerry McInerney and Frank Grant out against a very strong Howth pair. The Sutton lads played well in very difficult conditions keeping the match to all square into the second 9. The Howth pair, then showed their mettle and won the match well 4 up in the second 9. A well-deserved victory but fair play to Gerry and Frank who represented Sutton with their usual tenacity and pride.

The final match saw David Corrigan and Conor Litchfield out against another strong Howth pairing. David and Conor were not happy with their performance in Greenore and had practiced hard to prepare for this match. The match proved to be the tightest of tight matches with no more than a hole between the pairings all the way through. David and Conor took 1 up leads a couple of times during the match only to be clawed back by Howth. In the end the match was called in All Square after 14. A great performance away from the Sutton lads in very difficult conditions and a deserved half point.

In the end, Howth were deserved winners. They play Clontarf in the semi-finals, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the winner of this match wins the North Leinster section. Many thanks to the Sutton Jimmy Bruen squad. We played 14 players in all during the various rounds, and all contributed greatly. We got to the quarter finals and represented the club well.
