Sutton V Greenore, Jimmy Bruen - 3rd Round 12-06-2022
Match Report
Tom Shanahan, Manager 2022.
Sutton had a very difficult draw with 3 away to Greenore and 2 at home in Sutton. The weather was reasonable with that incessant wind (when will it stop? – it has been blowing now for 3 months non- stop) blowing across Sutton and Greenore courses and the occasional shower of rain.
Report on Jimmy Bruen 3 rd Round match v Greenore – 12th June
HOME
Our first pair David O’Neill and Brian Fitzsimons started with a bang holing out for a 2 at the first to go one up. They were 3 up after 5 and never looked back finishing deserved 5 up winners.
Our second pair Stephen Moriarty and Cathal Clinch faced a much tougher encounter. The Greenore pair Sutton faced were gritty and steady with excellent short games. Their match was even all the way through with never more than a hole between the 2 teams. Greenore struck a blow going one up at the 17th, but the Sutton lads levelled the match on 18 with a good 4 to send the match down 19. 19 was halved and the Sutton team won on 20 after an epic struggle. A great win
AWAY
First out for Sutton were the experienced paid of David Corrigan and Conor Litchfield. They had a tight match with no more than a hole or two between them right up to 11. The Greenore pair then forged ahead to win 5 up.
Next came the pairing Niall McNamara and Sam Brennan. Fair play to Sam. He had come in as a late substitute for James Bowen who had to withdraw for personal reasons and played his heart out. This was a very tight match with no more than a hole between the pairs all the way to 18. The standard of golf was high and the Greenore pair stole a win at the last with a good par to win 1 up.
Our final away pair were the old workhorses Gerry McInerney and Frank Grant. The Sutton pair started well and were 4 up after 8 but then were gradually clawed back to be 1 up standing on the 18th tee. Frank knocked his drive out of bounds, and we thought we would be going down 19.
Greenore hit a good drive, a poor second a bad chip and then 3 putted. Sutton made it 50 yards short of the green in 4 and then Gerry McInerney proceeded to hit a fantastic bunker shot into 3 feet which Frank slotted for a half on the hole and a 1 up win.
Overall result Sutton 3 Greenore 2. A really marvellous effort on the part of all 5 Sutton pairings. They showed true grit and not a little skill.
Onwards into North Leinster we go and face the old enemy Howth in the Quarter Finals which must be played within 3 weeks.
FAR AND SURE.
Stephen Moriarty’s crucial putt on 20th to win.
