Jimmy Bruen V Swords Open
Sutton advance to Round 3 with top quality displays of foursomes golf against a determined Swords Open squad
11th May 2025 (J Bruen is combined WHI of 14)
Our Away men provided the final result needed, while the games at home were won early with
some awesome golf.
Ben Logan and Neville Firth were first out at home. 8 straight up and professional pars on Front 9 put Ben and Nev into a commanding 4up lead at the turn (it even allowed for a lengthy sandwich pitstop during hole 10). Swords were feeling the heat and more pars and a birdie on the back 9 from our pair soon had Swords conceding defeat early on the 13 th green…superb golf gents!
1st team out away in Swords were young guns Niall McNamara and Jack O’Gorman. This was a very close and evenly contested match for most of the round with both teams in the lead on different occasions. Swords were very steady all through and got the upper hand from 14 on to close out on 17th . Hard luck lads who played good golf particularly on front 9.
For Match 2 in Sutton, we had the Gavin Fitzgerald and Donnacha Butler performance. Ok, it started with not the best 1 st hole but what followed was pretty awesome. In 15 holes, we were treated to 6 birdies, driving the green on the 10 th by Donnacha (not downwind btw), Gavin single putting holes 6 to 8 for 2 birdies and par and over 50 feet of putts made in those holes alone. The match was concluded on the 15 th with a 2.5 foot birdie and with our men 1 under Gross in 4somes by that stage – superb golf by any measure.
Attention then turned to Match 2 in Swords to determine the overall result with our pairing of James Bowen and Ronan O’Driscoll (#BOWROD) . It was to be another tight affair out in Swords where James reportedly didn’t put a foot wrong all day. Alongside James, Ronan was going great too and delivered one of his magic putting shots that was measured “as the distance from the Guinness tap in our members bar to the toilets door and back again” or about 60 foot to the rest of us. So it was no surprise when Ronan and James went 1up on 17 th hole to secure the overall win for Sutton while we all listened to the live commentary coming through in the carpark in Sutton. Brilliant stuff gents!
Our course was in good order (especially the greens in opinion of putting genius Gavin) – thanks Simon and team.
We now play our neighbours Portmarnock GC in Round 3 – an exciting tie lies ahead.
